Anthony Richardson has little reason to renew the lease on his living situation beyond the 2026 season after news broke that he will not be guaranteed a spot on the Indianapolis Colts roster in 2027. However, by setting an expiration date earlier than 2027, the team could move up the timeline to this summer, based on how Richardson performs in the various practice settings between now and September.
As such, Richardson is arguably really on a month-to-month contract, and the end could come at any time with the fifth-year option off the table, according to Mike Chappell via a Thursday report by Dov Kleiman on X.
If the end does come, here’s a look at five potential landing spots that could make sense this offseason.
Anthony Richardson Landing Spots That Make Sense
#5 – Dallas Cowboys
Anthony Richardson might need more time to settle in and watch an established quarterback work on a demonstrable high-end offense. Dallas would be the best option for that. After spending some time with Brian Schottenheimer and the other stars on the team, Richardson could potentially sell that he was fixed with just one solid game, which may give him a chance elsewhere.
#4 – Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers would also have an offense that could prop up Anthony Richardson. He might have an easier time getting into the building as well, with backup Jake Browning coming off a disastrous season in Cincinnati. Even if he can’t initially defeat Browning, Richardson could have a solid chance against Connor Bazelak for the third spot.
#3 – Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers are a team on the incline and if Anthony Richardson could get a ticket onto the ship, it could take him places. Kenny Pickett and Will Grier might be fair competition for Richardson, who offers a break from Bryce Young in many ways. Richardson could also be a gadget player if Carolina could repurpose him.
#2 – Chicago Bears
Most would agree the Chicago Bears could use some fresh blood, with Tyson Bagent currently the plan at backup quarterback. Richardson could give the quarterback a run for his money and, if geographical location is important to him, would be a way for him to stay in the upper Midwest.
#1 – Los Angeles Chargers
The Los Angeles Chargers already have a project quarterback like Anthony Richardson on staff with Trey Lance. However, if Los Angeles wants to create a quarterback competition for the backup spot, Los Angeles is the most likely place to give Richardson a fair shot in training camp. After a disastrous run in Indianapolis thus far, it could be Richardson’s best chance to get into a situation that could benefit the team and himself.
