Is Aaron Rodgers Coming Back to the Steelers? Report Sheds Light on Veteran QB’s Future

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a lot of questions heading into the new season, and perhaps the biggest one would be whether or not Aaron Rodgers would return for another season. He is currently one of the oldest active quarterbacks right now so he is deciding between retirement or another year in the league. This decision would shape the Steelers’ season as the team needs a good starting QB right now.

Now, Pittsburgh sports reporter Andrew Fillipponi is reporting that the veteran quarterback will be arriving in Pittsburgh and the likeliest reason he is there is to sign with the Steelers. Details of what this contract would be are still not known.

At 42 years old, Aaron Rodgers would become the oldest active starting quarterback in the NFL should this happen. This would also mean Steelers rookie Drew Allar would be his backup, and this would also give him yet another young quarterback to mentor and develop. Allar was selected during the third round of last month’s NFL draft as a response to the Aaron Rodgers situation as the elder quarterback became a free agent.

As for Rodgers himself, many expected him to retire by the end of last season, right after the Steelers were eliminated during the playoffs. However, the veteran QB had been vague whether to play for another year or retire, leaving the team in limbo regarding his status.

What the Pittsburgh Steelers QB Depth Looks Like Should Aaron Rodgers Return

As for their quarterback depth, it should be certain that even at 42, Aaron Rodgers would be getting that coveted QB1 spot. However, there may still be some formalities, such as him earning it in a quarterback competition.

For QB2, it may go to veteran Mason Rudolph, who had returned to the team that drafted him in 2025. He had been Rodgers’ backup last year. QB3 should go to Will Howard, much like last year, while QB4 may go to Drew Allar. However, due to NFL rules, one of them may get cut or traded to another team, as teams are only allowed three quarterbacks.
