Donovan Dent has announced that he could be returning to basketball just months after announcing his retirement, as he aims to take advantage of the new eligibility rule around college sports made by the NCAA. Amid some criticism over the ruling and its implementation, an NCAA Division 1 head coach has spoken about what he feels about the whole situation.
That head coach is Doug Gottlieb, who currently leads the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay program as their basketball head coach, and responded to a tweet by college basketball insider Jeff Goodman, as he urged the NCAA to make a blanket ruling allowing last year’s seniors’ eligibility.
Gottlieb made it clear that coaches were told they could fill up their rosters, but now, with someone like Donovan Dent becoming available, they might have to let go of a freshman.
“We were told, no shot. Filled up our rosters. Maybe left a spot… so now we jettison the freshman? Don’t get me wrong, we will all create space, but it will be at someone else’s expense,” Gottlieb said.
What Did Donovan Dent Say?
Donovan Dent made it clear that he’s willing to come out of retirement to take advantage of the new eligibility rules and was urged to take advantage of the opportunity now before it’s too late.
“I just looked at it as another opportunity because I was completely done with it, and seeing that they made a fifth year possible and all of my coaches and my family were like,’ Let’s give it one more,’” said Dent to KRQE.
“They kind of talked to me about it, and I was like, okay. We just look at it like another opportunity for a blessing, I guess.”
The rule’s impact on coaches is still being felt, and while they may welcome it, it could lead to some unfortunate players being left out.
