The Brandon Aiyuk saga with the San Francisco 49ers has now become confusing and frustrating for fans. Aiyuk, a 28-year-old wide receiver, is technically on the 49ers team, but he hasn’t played a game for the franchise since 2024.
He did tear his ACL and MCL, but that was back in Week 7 of the 2024 season. The injury prematurely ended his season, and he eventually recovered to be game-ready. In July 2025, Aiyuk was placed on the PUP list.
Four months later, the 49ers voided the guaranteed money in his contract for 2026 due to lack of participation. There was a lot of money involved in the situation because Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension with the 49ers in August 2024.
Now, the franchise is desperate to trade the wide receiver. The problem is that no team wants to agree to a trade because they know the 49ers will eventually release him. The Commanders have emerged as an interested team over the last week, but the trade-release dilemma is still in effect.
“The Commanders have interest but they’re waiting for the 49ers to cut him.. The 49ers don’t wanna cut him because they know the Commanders are interested,” Ian Rapoport reported.
All this tension has started to rub fans the wrong way. Fans recently expressed their frustration over the ongoing drama on social media.
“Sh*t show,” a fan wrote.
“that’s petty asf,” a fan wrote.
“It’s not fair at all, the draft is over and the niners have no interest of keeping him. You want the commanders to give up a draft pick and take on that dumba** contract just because? That sh*t makes zero sense bro,” a fan wrote.
“I thought SF was a class organization, players are watching how petty they’re being,” a fan wrote.
“NFL should be investigating. Thats just ridiculous on the 49ers end,” a fan wrote.
As of now, no one is winning this battle. But Aiyuk is wasting what could be his prime years in the NFL.
Teams Can’t Get a Hold of Brandon Aiyuk
The star wide receiver isn’t helping this case either. As per a recent report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, teams are having a hard time getting a hold of Brandon Aiyuk, which includes the San Francisco 49ers.
“I think the reason a team is not trading for him right now is they don’t want to assume the current contract that he has. It’s a situation where he hasn’t been in clear and constant communication with the Niners, and they have had a hard time getting a hold of him,” he reported.
Schefter claimed that other teams haven’t been able to reach out to him as well and it’s only making the situation worse for all parties.
