Ex-Wolverines Star Reveals His Influence on Tarris Reed Jr. Transferring from Michigan to Dan Hurley’s UConn

Michigan Wolverines forward Harrison Hochberg revealed during a recent interview that he may have played a role in UConn Huskies center Tarris Reed Jr.’s transfer from the Wolverines to UConn in 2024.

On Monday, Coach Dusty May‘s Wolverines will face Coach Dan Hurley’s Huskies in the national championship game on neutral grounds, the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

In a post by @cbssportscbb on Instagram, a quote was taken from Hochberg’s recent interview with sports reporter David Cobb. Hochberg revealed that he actually influenced Reed’s transfer to the Huskies by assuring him that a transfer to UConn would work wonders for him. Hochberg added that this happened when they were still close, presumably during their time as teammates.

“I remember when he was considering places, and he and I were pretty close. And I remember sitting in his car with him, debating between a few schools, and I was like, ‘I think you should go to UConn.’ You knew he was going to thrive there just based on Hurley toughening him up, which he did,” Hochberg was quoted as saying.

“The Michigan walk-on knew two years ago Tarris Reed would thrive at UConn,” @cbssportscbb on Instagram captioned.

Hochberg and Reed were teammates at Michigan during the 2023-24 campaign under the tutelage of Coach May. At the time, Hochberg was called up to the main roster while Reed was in his sophomore year of college basketball. The following season, though, Reed opted to transfer to the Huskies for his junior year after two seasons with the Wolverines. Now in his fourth year of eligibility, Reed will have to beat his former team to win his first national title.

Tarris Reed Jr. Is The Only Projected 2026 NCAA Title Game Starter To Begin With The Michigan Wolverines

In another post by @cbssportscbb on Instagram, it was pointed out that among the projected starters of this year’s national championship game, only Tarris Reed Jr. started his college basketball career with the Michigan Wolverines.

All the members of the Wolverines’ starting lineup transferred to the team during the 2025 offseason. As such, this makes Reed’s matchup against his former team all the more poetic.
