The Houston Cougars seem to have received some positive news as Kelvin Sampson has reportedly confirmed that Dedan Thomas Jr. has recovered from injury and will be available for the new season.
This is per college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, who gave the update on social media platform X, while also giving updates on other injured players across teams.
Dedan Thomas Jr. joined the University of Houston in the transfer portal a few months ago, but a foot injury threatened to hurt the start of his campaign at the Cougars. The update means that coach Sampson will have his top point guard now ready to fire from the very start of the season.
Thomas Jr. joined Houston from LSU in the portal and averaged 15.3 points per game last season for the Tigers before making a move in his senior year to a team looking to replace the talented Kingston Flemings, who moved up to the NBA via the draft last month.
Kelvin Sampson’s Thoughts On Dedan Thomas Jr.
Kelvin Sampson knows a good young player when he sees one, and he clearly has high hopes for Dedan Thomas Jr. at the Houston Cougars, and he made it clear when a deal was finalized.
“Our point guard position has been the strength of our program. We have never not had a great point guard. Now, we slide to Dedan Thomas Jr., and we will just keep going,” Sampson said, per the official Cougars website.
“DJ is a point guard’s point guard. He can manage the game, and he understands the game at a freakishly high level. He is very smart and can get in the paint. He plays off his imagination and is very savvy. All of our guards are going to benefit from having DJ because he is going to make them all better.”
