“Praying for You”: Fans Unite in Hope as ESPN’s Dick Vitale Provides Update on Cancer Treatment

Legendary ESPN broadcaster Dick Vitale revealed that he’s scheduled to have PET scans to check if immunotherapy is working well enough on his liver and lungs following a fifth cancer diagnosis earlier this year.

Vitale asked for prayers from fans and said he would stay upbeat.

“Need your 🙏🙏🙏 THANKS since I am going to bed now as I must be at Hospital early for bloodwork & a PET SCAN that will determine if my IMMUNOTHERAPY treatments were effective vs the cancer on my lungs & liver . I have stayed active & will always THINK POSITIVE & HAVE FAITH,” he wrote on X.

Fans obliged, wishing him the very best in the comments and sending him strength to deal with the current crisis.

Dick Vitale’s troubles with cancer first began in 2021 when he was diagnosed with melanoma, and a few months later he revealed he was also diagnosed with lymphoma. Cancer in his vocal cords hit in 2023, along with lymph node cancer in 2024. The lung and liver cancer was confirmed earlier this year, but through it all, Vitale has been fighting like the true champion he is.

Dick Vitale’s Ongoing Fight With Cancer Has Helped Raise $105 Million

While Dick Vitale has been dealing with cancer on and off since 2021, he has made sure to use his platform to send the right message. In April, the former coach and broadcaster said he had raised $105 million for pediatric cancer research and that he aims to secure even more support for the cause.

While his broadcasting career has seen stops and starts due to his illness, he remains a huge part of college basketball, even working during March Madness this year alongside Charles Barkley.

The college basketball world will collectively hope that the 87-year-old can get through this hurdle just as he has done with others in the past.
