Dusty May and the Michigan Wolverines are just one game away from the national championship game this season. To book their spot in the season finale, they need a win over the Arizona Wildcats in the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.
Before the game, there were reports of Michigan players training at the University’s football stadium, known as the ‘Big House.’ But what was the reason behind this type of preparation?
Before the Michigan vs. Arizona Final Four game, CBS Sports‘ Tracy Wolfson had a segment talking about why Dusty chose to have his team train at the ‘Big House.’
It was to help the players get accustomed to the feeling of playing in a football stadium since this year’s Final Four and season finale are hosted at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
“He (Dusty May) took Florida Atlantic to the Final Four in 2023. He told me that experience certainly helps in terms of preparation and how he handled this week. They believed all along they were going to be here. They developed April habits early,” Tracy said.
“He also said they’ve been preparing all season long for this depth perception. And they rolled a basketball hoop out into the Big House this week, so the players can work on shooting with this odd perception in this arena. They’ve experienced it there. We’ll see if it helps. But certainly, no stone unturned in terms of preparation,” she added.
Dusty May took over as the coach of the Michigan Wolverines in 2024. In his debut campaign, he helped the program qualify for March Madness as the Big Ten Tournament champions. They made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, where their hopes of winning a national championship ended following a loss to the Auburn Tigers.
Dusty May addresses speculations of leaving Michigan for UNC
The North Carolina Tar Heels are actively searching for a new head coach after firing Hubert Davis last month. Dusty May’s name has emerged as a potential candidate for this job.
During Friday’s press conference, the Michigan coach addressed these rumors while showcasing his contentment with being in Ann Arbor.
“I think it’s well-documented how happy I am at Michigan,” May said, as per ESPN. “Obviously, my private life, personal life, my family, their happiness is very important. So yeah, I love it at Michigan. But I’ll never, you’ll never hear me comment on any other job unless Michigan lets me go — then I’ll comment on every job.”
This season, Hubert Davis and UNC were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. In five years, he put up a 125-54 overall record with the program.
