Dusty May’s 2025 Contract Extension: How Much Does Michigan’s HC Earn?

Dusty May is one of the 10 highest-paid college basketball head coaches, and after leading Michigan to the Final Four, there are now rumors that he might not stay there for long.

He is rumored to be a target for the vacant job at North Carolina, which means that UNC might be offering something much higher than his already-high Michigan salary. This begs the question of how much is his salary worth?

May is considered one of the top 10 highest-paid coaches in college basketball after he signed a five-year contract extension last year, during the offseason.

That contract extension lasts until 2030 and guarantees that he will make an average of $5.1 million per year during that period. Previously, he made $3.75 million per year before he signed that contract extension.

This still does not include his incentives and bonuses, and getting to the Final Four means that he is in for additional payment. He did fail to win the Big Ten championship, losing to Purdue in the finals, but he did win the Big Ten regular-season title, which is projected to add at least $50,000 to his salary.

Should he win any award, such as Big Ten or national Coach of the Year, he would also get a bonus.

In addition to his own pay bump, the Michigan contract extension also saw him getting an improved NIL war chest in addition to getting more resources to his program. His entire staff received a raise across the board and he also gained better freedom to hire new assistant coaches because of this better payment system.

What Are Dusty May’s Buyout Terms?

Ahead of the Final Four, reporters asked Dusty May about the rumors that he may be taking the job at North Carolina. The coach vehemently refused to entertain those questions but this has led many to wonder about what the terms of his buyout agreement with Michigan is.

His contract extension also adjusted his buyout, which increased it to $7.5 million from $5 million. This amount decreases every year and Michigan must pay him 70% of his remaining base salary should he get fired without cause.
