Michigan State University’s men’s basketball head coach is one of the most successful college basketball coaches in history, with 27 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and eight Final Fours.
Coming from Iron Mountain, Michigan, he played for Northern Michigan in college basketball, and after graduating, he was named the head coach of Ishpeming High School for one season.

Tom Izzo, who has been the head coach of Michigan State since 1995, signed a five-year rolling contract with the program. Until December last year, Izzo was earning about $6.2 million annually. In December 2025, the program’s Board of Trustees approved a $1 million annual raise, increasing his compensation to about $7.2 million per year from January. With this raise, he became the highest-paid men’s basketball coach in the Big Ten Conference.

Since 2011, Izzo has been paid over $70 million in total, out of which his basic pay was over $63 million.
After Michigan State approved the raise in his contract, Tom Izzo shared his gratitude towards the program.
“I’m incredibly appreciative of the continued support from the Board of Trustees, President Guskiewicz and AD Batt,” Izzo aid. “With strong leadership and positive momentum throughout the University and the department, the pieces are in place for sustained success, and I’m as energized as ever to chase championships. We’re going to keep working tirelessly to make all Spartans proud.”
Izzo is currently in the middle of his 31st season with the program. Entering Saturday’s game against Maryland, the Spartans are 17-2 overall and are ranked No. 10 in the nation.
