Mark Pope’s Kentucky is going through a major crisis at the moment. They are fifth in the SEC and have an underwhelming record of 13-6.
This record might seem average, but it is actually impressive, considering how the season started and has panned out for them so far. Despite major setbacks, Kentucky is on a four-game winning streak.
However, bad news keeps piling on for Mark Pope. Several players, such as Denzel Aberdeen, Trent Noah, Mo Dioubate, Jaland Lowe, Jayden Quaintance, and Kam Williams, have picked up injuries.
In this time of tragedy, Kentucky is reportedly set to reach out to G-League guard Dink Pate. This might upset big names in college basketball like John Calipari, Rick Pitino, Tom Izzo, Mark Few, and Matt Painter, who have spoken about the lack of regulations and age restrictions in the NCAA. They demand that teams should not be able to sign players who have been NBA draftees or played in the G-League to keep it fair for the high school student-athletes.
However, in this time of need, Kentucky does not seem to have many options. Moreover, the player that Mark Pope has reportedly chosen to add might fall under a gray area and might just qualify as fair play for even the coaches who are against signing G-League players.
Dink Pate, 19 years old, opted out of college and chose to play for the G-League Ignite under head coach Jason Hart, and has spent the last two seasons in the G-League after going undrafted. To show his excitement, Pate even left a comment under the post that reported Kentucky’s interest in him.
