Bill Self’s Kansas Jayhawks recently upset the fifth-ranked Houston Cougars, 69-56. Kansas has been in a sort of a rut lately. There has been a lot of noise around Darryn Peterson and, in turn, Bill Self and Kansas’ overall chances in the NCAA tournament. Kansas is 21-7 after the win over Houston. While the Cougars are 23-5, this loss to a struggling Kansas must have hurt Kevin Sampson and company.
Amid all the scrutiny around his injuries, availability, and mindset, Peterson did a pretty decent job in their win. He played 30 minutes, which hasn’t really happened that often this season, and scored 14 points while recording 4 rebounds. Tre White had the most points, 23, in the Kansas team, and 5 rebounds. He also scored 3-4 three-pointers.
As for the Houston Cougars, Kingston Flemings scored the most points, 16, with 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Other than that, it was a pretty underwhelming performance from the Cougars. With three games remaining for both Kansas and Houston, this was a pretty crucial outing ahead of March Madness.
Sampson was disappointed in his team, and he called out his defense while talking about the remaining schedule. He also revealed that his players need rest. He said, “Our guys are beat up.”
Sampson also made a comment about Kansas, which did not sit right with Darryn Peterson.
“Kansas is one of those teams where, you just… never know. But they are pretty good. So are we, we are pretty good too. Maybe not tonight, they were pretty good,” Kelvin Sampson said.
After this, Darryn Peterson asked the reporters:
“What do you mean ‘with Kansas you never know?’ Dang. I don’t like that.”

Fans online sided with Sampson and did not like Peterson’s reaction.
“DnP taking offense to this when they literally got curb stomped in their own building by Cincinnati 3 days ago. Kelvin Sampson isn’t wrong whatsoever,” one fan stated.
“Well DP…you’re probably the reason he said it,” another commented.
“His own team doesn’t know what they’re getting half the time buddy calls out sick an hour before games and subs himself out whenever he feels like it. Have a little self-awareness,” one fan called out Darryn Peterson.
“You can tell this guy will make the draft process a pain in the a**. If he goes somewhere like Sacramento, he will sit out every other game because he ‘doesn’t like it there,'” another fan predicted.
“Couldn’t be anymore true, especially with Darryn Peterson,” one fan said.
