Darryn Peterson has faced a lot of criticism recently. The criticism stems from his unavailability on the court as he’s either been missing games or playing limited minutes. Many believe it’s his attempt to protect his draft stock.
The Kansas Jayhawks played the Houston Cougars on Monday. After weeks of being criticized for his absence, Peterson laced up for his team and played 30 minutes. He dropped 14 points with four rebounds and an assist.
It wasn’t one of his best outings, as he has been averaging nearly 20 points per game, but seeing Peterson back on the court was a joy for Kansas fans. After the game, he was asked about the criticism he had faced recently.
“Somebody has something to say probably after every game this year. I don’t even pay attention anymore,” he said.
Peterson isn’t bothered by what people have to say about him. Right now, he’s focusing on finishing the season with the Jayhawks and preparing for the NBA Draft. He also said that he’s really enjoying his time in Kansas.
“It was electric out there today. Part of the reason of coming to Kansas is the environment,” he said.
Peterson is expected to be a top pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. Many believe that he’ll be the number one draft pick over AJ Dybantsa. Peterson has a strong case to be the number one draft pick this year.
The critics believe that his unavailability for the Jayhawks in the final stretch of the regular season might harm his draft chances.
Darryn Peterson Addressed His Absence
Peterson isn’t an outspoken individual. So, we get to hear very little from him, and that allows the narratives around him spread more. For the last few weeks, while he was being criticized, Peterson was silent.
He recently spoke to ESPN and shared his thoughts on the saga.
“Everybody’s got an opinion on it,” Peterson told ESPN. “But basketball is my life. If I could have been out there every game this year, I would have. If you would have asked me last year, what were my goals for this year, I would never mention missing games. So all this stuff kind of just happened, but I’ve got to deal with it.”
As a leader on the team, Peterson is expected to be with the Jayhawks at this point in the season. He played 30 minutes against the Houston Cougars, which might be a sign of things to come.
