Experts on “The Field of 68: After Dark” podcast recently shared insights into a marquee matchup between two powerhouse programs and how the injury-riddled team can win. On Monday, Feb. 23, coach Hubert Davis‘ 2025-26 North Carolina Tar Heels are scheduled to face coach Pat Kelsey’s Louisville Cardinals on the former’s home court, the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Thus, the aforementioned show discussed the ACC rivals’ matchup. Among those featured on the said episode was former UNC legend and now collegiate hoops analyst Tyler Hansbrough, who explained how his alma mater can come out on top, despite losing Caleb Wilson to injury. For Hansbrough, it all boils down to defense.
“I’ll say, to me, what’s going to really decide this game is if Carolina comes out and plays defense. I think if they play defense and they can lock down Mikel Brown Jr., I think that’s going to be the difference-maker. I know that we struggled a little bit in games that we’ve lost defensively. But I will say we’re a different team when we play at home. We always play much better. So, I think that’s going to be the difference-maker,” Hansbrough said.
As mentioned, coach Davis’ Tar Heels are dealing with the loss of Wilson (fractured left hand), who has led the squad in scoring throughout the campaign. North Carolina now aims to improve its overall record of 21-6 (9-5 ACC). For coach Kelsey’s Cardinals, they are looking to improve on their 20-7 (9-5 ACC) overall record.
Mike LaTulip Points Out What The UNC Tar Heels Should Focus On Against The Louisville Cardinals
After Tyler Hansbrough pointed out how important defense is for the North Carolina Tar Heels to defeat the Louisville Cardinals, former Illinois Fighting Illini guard Mike LaTulip doubled down on this by highlighting which facet of defense UNC should focus on.
For LaTulip, it is most important for the Tar Heels to focus on perimeter defense, as Louisville is one of the best shooting teams in the nation.
“Yeah, and anytime you’re trying to defend the three-point line, it starts with dribble penetration. You can’t let Mikel Brown live in the paint. You can’t let [Ryan] Conwell, you know, get two feet in the paint, or even [J’Vonne] Hadley or [Isaac] McKneely sometimes will kind of straight line drive and get in there and spray it out. So, the perimeter defense, guard your yard, that’s of utmost importance for Carolina,” LaTulip explained.
