“They’re Not Going to Let Him Get Back”: Analyst Raises Doubts Over Caleb Wilson’s UNC Future After Brutal Hand Injury

North Carolina star Caleb Wilson fractured his left hand in the first half of his team’s 75-66  loss to Miami on Tuesday. The No. 11 Tar Heels initially reported that Wilson had suffered a sprained wrist, and he returned to the game in the second half. However, tests after the game confirmed that the player had broken his hand.

Since Wilson is set to be sidelined indefinitely, analyst Matt Norlander shared his thoughts on the UNC star and his potential recovery. He said on CBS’ “Eye On College Basketball” show on Friday:

“He’s also a top-five pick. I think if it’s Caleb Wilson’s decision, he’s going to get back on the floor as soon as possible. But they’re not going to let him get back until he’s fully healthy. And then if he is healthy, when is that going to be? My prediction is that we will see him play for North Carolina again. But we have to allow for the possibility that he has played his last game in North Carolina, which would be just so unfortunate, because I love watching him play.”

Wilson finished with a season-low 12 points in 26 minutes against Miami, while also recording six rebounds.

The freshman has been a key player for the Tar Heels this season. However, some fear that he might have already played his last game for the program.

Wilson, however, shared a powerful message about his injury on X, hoping to return to action soon for UNC.

“I am grateful for whatever God is trying to tell me through this injury!!! I will be back Tarheel Nation… I LOVE THIS TEAM AND PROGRAM #StayTuned,” Wilson tweeted on Friday.

Caleb Wilson is Considered an Early First-Round Pick Heading Into the 2026 NBA Draft

Many believe that Caleb Wilson will be an early first-round pick at this year’s NBA Draft. Some have even predicted him be a top-five pick, while others are projecting the North Carolina star as a top-10 selection. Wilson is averaging 19.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, and 1.5 steals at UNC this season.

He is on course to earn All-American honors and is in contention to win several individual awards as well.

However, the Tar Heels will want Wilson to return to action as soon as possible. UNC is considered among the favorites to win the national title this season, but they will need their best players to scale the success in the postseason.

North Carolina will face Pittsburgh on Saturday.
