In July 2024, UConn and Dan Hurley agreed to a six-year contract worth $50 million total. The contract will run through the end of the 2029-30 season. This deal pays him annually $8.3 million, making him one of the highest-paid men’s college basketball coaches in the country.
His base pay under this contract is about $400,000 per year. He earns other bonuses and incentives for duties like speaking, consulting, media appearances, fundraising, and outreach. For the 2024-25 season, he earned $6.375 million. Every year he stays as UConn head coach, he earns a retention bonus of $1 million.
“Dan Hurley is the best men’s basketball coach in the nation and we are delighted that he will continue to call UConn home,” University President Radenka Maric said in a statement via Forbes.
While not explicitly mentioned with the accurate figures, the head coach’s contract includes performance-based incentives such as conference championships and NCAA Tournament progression.
It’s also important to note that Dan Hurley was offered to become the Los Angeles Lakers head coach with a reported contract of six years, $70 million. But he chose to stay back at UConn over leading an NBA team filled with stars like LeBron James and others.
Upon learning that Hurley was staying put, athletic director David Benedict said the school is “thrilled” with the coach’s decision, adding:
“He has helped return our men’s basketball program back to the pinnacle of the sport, including back-to-back NCAA Championships, and we’re grateful for his loyalty to UConn. We look forward to Dan’s continued leadership on and off the court at UConn. He will continue to bring great pride to Husky fans everywhere as we work toward a three-peat.”
In the ongoing 2025-26 season, Hurley’s UConn is 18-1 and is ranked No. 2 in the country.
