Bill Self Clears Stance on Jerome Tang’s Firing With Biggest Reason for Surprise Kansas State Move

Kansas Jayhawks coach Bill Self has commented on the Kansas State Wildcats’  firing of Jerome Tang. Self said that while he likes Tang, he also acknowledges the program’s decision. On Sunday, Feb. 15, Tang was relieved of his role by Kansas State University a few days after he delivered a controversial rant.

In a video posted by collegiate basketball reporter Noah Sacco on X/Twitter on Monday, Self’s most recent media availability is seen. He was asked to share his thoughts on the firing of Tang. The tenured shot-caller said he feels for Tang and respects him as a coach, but reasserted that at the end of the day, it was a business decision made by the Wildcats.

“ It really surprised me with the timing and everything. I think sometimes, I’ve actually thought about this a lot and I have a hard time coming up with a conclusion because we don’t really know everything that’s going on, and we try to make determinations from the cheap seats based on what other people say or what other people write. I’ll be honest, I like Jerome,” Self shared.

“I hate to see when any coach gets let go, but I also know that it’s big money and it’s big business and people make decisions based on what is in the best interest of their, you know, employer. And the employer is Kansas State University,” he continued.

In the 2025-26 campaign, Self has steered his Jayhawks squad to an overall record of 19-6 (9-3 Big 12), and currently sits as the No. 3 seed in the Big 12 conference standings. While a national tournament appearance seems to be where Self and company are headed, the same cannot be said for Kansas State. The Wildcats are in the midst of a disappointing stretch where they have only won one of their last 12 matchups.
