Kansas Jayhawks coach Bill Self recently revealed that a team doctor had urged Darryn Peterson to sit out their most recent game. However, fans do not believe him. On Monday, Feb. 9, coach Self and his Jayhawks faced coach Tommy Lloyd’s Arizona Wildcats on the former’s home floor, the Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas.
Peterson did not suit up for the highly intense affair, missing his 11th game of the season. But luckily for him and the Kansas faithful, the Jayhawks handed Arizona its first loss of the season with an 82-78 victory. According to a report by collegiate hoops writer Mike Vernon on his X/Twitter, Self revealed that it was actually a team doctor’s call for Peterson to sit out the game due to illness.
Fans online did not believe Self and shared their own reactions.
“That is the biggest load of crap I’ve ever read,” one fan wrote.
“This is as bad of a contradiction as the minutes restriction thing after UCF,” another fan said.
“He over-explained. Lol he lied lol,” another user claimed.
“The doctor said, ‘No, I can’t let him go’ ??? 🤨🤷🏻♂️ I’m exhausted just trying to keep up with DNP’s maladies,” a fan shared with emojis.
Other X users pointed to some allegedly false statements Self has made in the past.
“This is the same Self that once told us Tyrell Reed had the highest vertical on the team,” one fan posted with a GIF.
“Is Bill a podcast listener? Sounds like he took @JayhawkTalk advice,” another fan questioned.
“Bill ain’t gonna say what’s really going on,” a fan asserted.
Peterson is regarded by the college basketball world as one of the best players in the nation, despite being a rookie. A likely one-and-done player for coach Self this year, Peterson’s flashes of greatness on the court have been restricted by injuries that have made him sit out a good amount of games for the Jayhawks. Through 24 games, Peterson has played just 13.

Bill Self Says He Was Confident That Darryn Peterson Would Play Against The Arizona Wildcats
Also in the report by Mike Vernon on his X/Twitter, Bill Self was quoted as saying that he was confident that Darryn Peterson was going to play against the Arizona Wildcats.
Self believed this even when he said that Peterson did not play to his standard against the Utah Utes, their game before the Wildcats matchup.
“Well, Darryn was sick against Utah and wasn’t very effective by his standards at all, but he didn’t feel well. I mean, he’s got all the doctors and everybody working with him beginning before the game Saturday, and practice Sunday, it got worse. But adrenaline is going to kick in, and he’s going to be able to play. He said he could and everything, but I was told there’s an even chance that he wasn’t going to probably feel up to doing it,” Self said.
