How Much Does Kansas State Owe Jerome Tang? Contract, Buyout and Legal Options Explained After Firing

Days after going on a rant against his players following the 91-62 Cincinnati loss, Jerome Tang has been fired by the Kansas State Wildcats. Tang joined the Wildcats in 2022 after decades of work as an assistant and associate HC.

In 2022, he signed a six-year deal worth $14.1 million with the Wildcats. He received multiple contract extensions over the years, and his salary, at the time of getting fired, was at $3.6 million.

Tang was fired for cause, but he plans on fighting the program’s decision and getting the money he’s owed. So, how much does Kansas State owe Jerome Tang? As per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, he’s owed $18.67 million.

“I am deeply disappointed with the university’s decision and strongly disagree with the characterization of my termination,” Tang told ESPN. “I have always acted with integrity and faithfully fulfilled my responsibilities as head coach. I would like to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the opportunity to serve as Head Coach at Kansas State. It has been one of the great honors of my life.”

Thamel stated that he’s grateful for the opportunity, getting to work with players and coaching staff, and having a passionate fan base. While he is adamant on fighting the for-cause firing, Kansas State AD Gene Taylor has a different take on it.

“There’s language in his contract that addresses certain things that could potentially bring embarrassment. Basically, his comments about the student-athletes and the negative reaction to those comments from a lot of sources, both nationally and locally is where I kind of thought we needed to make the decision,” he said.

During his tenure, Tang maintained a 71-57 record.

What Did Jerome Tang Say About His Players?

The rant that led to Tang getting fired happened after the Kansas State Wildcats loss against the Cincinnati Bearcats. They lost 62-91 at home, and when Tang went for the press conference, he didn’t hold back.

“This was embarrassing,” he said. “These dudes do not deserve to wear this uniform, and there will be very few of them in it next year. I’m embarrassed for the university, I’m embarrassed for our fans, and our student section. It’s just ridiculous.”

Tang’s frustration at the time seemed valid because it was their fifth loss in a row and 14th for the season. The Wildcats have been one of the worst teams in the conference this season. But if Tang kept that rant inside the locker room, he might still have his job.
