Brendan Sorsby’s situation could possibly get worse. The Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback is under NCAA investigation for sports gambling. Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech in January this year after two seasons with the Cincinnati Bearcats.
Before Cincinnati, Sorsby played for the Indiana Hoosiers in 2022 and 2023. In April 2026, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that the 22-year-old quarterback was under investigation for sports gambling and would seek treatment.
The NCAA prohibits student-athletes from betting on pro and college sports. Sorsby, who should have followed the same rule, is believed to have placed thousands of online bets on several sports through a gambling app.
As per ESPN, he also placed “bets on Indiana football while he was a member of the program in 2022.” While he’s already under investigation, Sorsby’s situation could get worse if the FBI becomes involved.
As per a recent USA Today Sports report, citing anonymous sources with knowledge of Sorsby’s situation, the FBI could choose to investigate the matter.
“It’s not guaranteed but it could be,” a college executive stated. “I don’t think it’s automatic, but would it be in their jurisdiction or perhaps what they are interested in? Yeah.”
“The second and third layer would be if you’ve placed a wager on your sport in question, usually the FBI gets involved. It’s all an automated process. There’s human interpretations (for lesser offenses, such as gambling on an unrelated sport), like signing up for FanDuel and then placing a wager on let’s say a basketball game.”
The source said that when a student-athlete places a wager on college football, an FBI investigation is highly likely, and that process could start “fairly quickly.” If that happens, Sorsby’s NFL dreams could be put on hold.
Brendan Sorsby is Trying to Regain College Eligibility
Sorsby is trying to regain his college eligibility in the hope of playing college football for one more year. He has transferred to the Texas Tech Red Raiders with that hope, and so far, it’s not certain whether he will play.
Sorsby has hired lawyer Jeffrey Kessler, who has an impressive track record in high-profile sports cases.
“Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby, who is under NCAA investigation for making bets via a gambling app, has retained the noted lawyer Jeffrey Kessler to try to regain his college eligibility,” Schefter reported. “If Sorsby and Kessler are unsuccessful in finding a path to eligibility, declaring for the NFL’s supplemental draft then would become an option. Sorsby would have until June 30 to declare for the supplemental draft.”
Kessler has represented the NFLPA on behalf of Tom Brady, Ray Rice, Ezekiel Elliott, Adrian Peterson, and the New Orleans Saints’ “Bountygate” players.
