After 14 seasons as the Yale Bulldogs’ football coach, Tony Reno is stepping down.

News broke Tuesday morning that Reno would not return to coach the Bulldogs for the 2026 season, due to health concerns. Reno hasn’t disclosed his reasons, but took a medical leave from the team in December.

In his 14 seasons as Yale’s head coach, Reno, led them to an 83-49 record including five Ivy League championships and was named Coach of the Year in the Ivy League for the 2022 and 2025 seasons.

3 Potential Candidates To Replace Yale’s Tony Reno

It’s anybody’s guess as to who will replace Tony Reno at Yale. They could look to stay in-house and promote one of their current coaches. Or they could go elsewhere and hire a new face to lead their team.

Here are three candidates that Yale could target to replace Reno:

    -Chris Ostrowsky

Chris Ostrowsky has been on the Bulldogs’ coaching staff since the 2021 season. He was hired as an offensive assistant and then was upgraded to being the WRs coach and assistant head coach. Since 2023, he’s been the team’s offensive coordinator. Last year, the Bulldogs had the second highest scoring offense and top rush offense in the Ivy League.

    -Sean McGowan

A native of Connecticut, Sean McGowan has been on the Yale Bulldogs’ football staff since 2015. His current title with the team is the head coach of the defense and he serves as the linebacker coach. He’s been the head coach of the defense since 2023, after serving as the defensive coordinator. His defense was first in scoring last season and 16th overall in the nation.

    -Corey Hetherman

Here’s one of out house candidate. Corey Hetherman was the defensive coordinator and linebackers at Miami this past season. He’s helped develop future first round picks and one of the best defenses in college football last season. Maybe Yale saw enough to offer him a head coaching position.
