Bill Belichick has added another quarterback to his lineup for the next season. The North Carolina Tar Heels recently added Taron Dickens, a former Western Carolina Catamounts star, to their quarterback room.
The Tar Heels have been busy in the recruiting cycle, adding several key players to the squad. However, Belichick hasn’t been able to keep some of his most valuable talents from last season.
Three quarterbacks left the team in the transfer portal. Although the Tar Heels have added three new quarterbacks, the loss of talent has been a major concern. The addition of Dickens is being seen as a big advantage for UNC.
Last season, he shattered the NCAA record for most consecutive passes completed in a single game with 46 in a row. He broke that record during the game against Wofford in October.
He finished last season with 3,508 yards, 38 touchdowns, two interceptions, and a 74.2% completion percentage. He was the SoCon Offensive Player of the Year in 2025. Dickens also made the First-team All-SoCon.
UNC needs a major turnaround in the next season. They had a disastrous run during the first-ever college football season coached by Bill Belichick. Coming off a legendary NFL career, the expectations from Belichick were through the roof.
The six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach missed the mark in every aspect. He went 4-8 in the season and failed to qualify for a Bowl Game. When the Tar Heels offered him a contract worth $10 million annually and millions in incentives on top of that, this wasn’t the result they were expecting.
So, in addition to restoring the reputation of the Tar Heels, Bill Belichick must do something extraordinary to prove that he is worthy of the big paycheck, and he can still lead a program at the age of 73.
Who Will Be the Starting Quarterback For UNC?
Belichick will have to figure out his starting quarterback situation way before the new season gets underway. During the transfer portal window, Belichick and the Tar Heels lost their primary quarterback, Gio Lopez.
With that, they were left with doubts over who would take over the position in the new setup. Billy Edwards Jr. emerged as an early favorite to be the next starting quarterback for the North Carolina Tar Heels next season.
However, the addition of Taron Dickens has added another option for Belichick and the Tar Heels. Dickens will likely challenge for the starting QB position, and based on his record-breaking run last season, he is a worthy contender.
