Friday night’s NCAA women’s basketball showdown will feature two historically rich programs going head-to-head in what’s touted to be an electric game. The LSU Tigers are slated to host the South Carolina Gamecocks at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge.
With all eyes on the battle of legendary coaches Dawn Staley and Kim Mulkey, LSU’s standout guard MiLaysia Fulwiley, despite now being a part of Team Louisiana’s roster, will have some affinity towards the Gamecocks, too. Fulwiley, after spending two years with the Carolina-based program, officially transferred to LSU.
The April of 2025 saw a cascading series of events that culminated in Fulwiley signing for Mulkey and the Tigers. After an 82-59 landslide defeat to the UConn Huskies, the South Carolina Gamecocks, featuring MiLaysia Fulwiley, ended their season with an overall record of 35-4, losing the national championship.
While this event in itself cannot be blamed for what transpired next, it’s safe to assume it played a major role. A few days after the natty defeat, Greenville News reported noises around Fulwiley’s potential decision to enter the transfer portal.
The next few days saw the reports actualizing into reality, with the star guard initially entering the transfer portal with a no-contact tag, then confirming her decision to enter the portal on her Instagram. 25th April, 2025, saw Malaysia officially announce her decision to join the LSU Tigers.
MiLaysia Fulwiley Opens Up On Difference Between Playing Under Staley & Mulkey
Leading up to this all-important game, MiLaysia Fulwiley was recently asked about the key differences between playing under current head coach Kim Mulkey and former head coach Dawn Staley.
On the Get Gordon podcast, Fulwiley gave insights as to how passionate Mulkey is, going as far as calling her crazy. While she called both Staley and Mulkey good, Fulwiley revealed she feels a little more free at LSU.
“Kim is crazy. Not crazy, she’s more passionate, I can say. Like at all times. Crazy passion like at all times. I think both are good but like little bit more freer here. I don’t worry about making mistakes. I know if I make a mistake, the next play, get it back. I like both coaches but probably like one of the key differences,” MiLaysia Fulwiley stated.
Throughout the course of her South Carolina tenure, MiLaysia put up consistent numbers, averaging 11.8 and 11.7 points in 2024 and 2025, respectively. For LSU so far this season, she has been hovering around the 13.4 point mark as far as her average is concerned.
