“I Don’t Wanna Win Because It’s MiLaysia Fulwiley”: Dawn Staley Clears the Air Before South Carolina’s Vital Showdown vs Kim Mulkey’s LSU

Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks vs Kim Mulkey’s LSU Tigers is one of the biggest games in college basketball. Staley and Kim Mulkey have been in the primes of their coaching for a while now, and it is always a spectacle when these two teams clash.

Staley’s South Carolina leads Mulkey’s LSU 18-12 in the head-to-head series. The Gamecocks have won their last 17 games against the Tigers, and LSU last beat South Carolina in 2012. Staley’s side has another golden opportunity to extend its lead.

Both South Carolina and LSU have been in tremendous form this season. There are minor details to separate the two sides. South Carolina is on top of the SEC with a 10-1 conference record and 24-2 overall. LSU is in touching distance with an 8-3 conference and 22-3 overall record. South Carolina is on a five-game winning streak, while LSU just pulled a blowout 77-44 win over Auburn. Thus, confidence for both teams is high, and a game of this gravity is always special for players. However, it will be extra special for MiLaysia Fulwiley.

Fulwiley transferred from Dawn Staley’s South Carolina to Kim Mulkey’s LSU this season after struggling for playing time with the Gamecocks. There were rumors of some bad blood between the coach and her former player. Staley was inevitably asked a question about Fulwiley.

“They’re just a part of the personnel of the other team now. Do we want to win? Absolutely. I don’t, I mean, I don’t want to win because it’s MiLaysia Fulwiley. I want to win because we got a chance to win the SEC. We got a chance to hopefully keep a number one seed on Selection Sunday night,” Dawn Staley said.

“So, it’s all of those things. The MiLaysia dynamic is, I mean, that’s the narrative that’s created, you know, the drum up the publicity for the game. For us, it’s not she was treated as Mikaylah Williams. She was treated as Flau’jae Johnson. You know, going down the line, it’s not, we’re not putting anything extra. We’re not going to do anything to her that is outside the norm. We’re going to play the game,” she added.
