One of the most talked-about players in women’s college basketball right now is MiLaysia Fulwiley. She joined Kim Mulkey’s LSU Tigers from South Carolina this season after a fallout with head coach Dawn Staley. There were disagreements about her playtime under Staley, and it was clear that she had to find another team.
Fulwiley played two seasons at South Carolina, but her profile did not really match what Staley expected from her players. Her average minutes played per game never surpassed the 20-minute mark in South Carolina. In her freshman season, she played 18.4 minutes per game and averaged 11.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists.
After winning the national championship in her very first season, she did not start a single game in 39 appearances. Her minutes played went slightly up to 18.9 minutes, as she averaged 11.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Now at LSU, although she has started only one game, her minutes per game are 21.5. She feels right at home. However, she has still not forgotten her South Carolina roots. During a recent off-court fun game, MiLaysia Fulwiley, Flau’jae Johnson, and Mikaylah Williams sat down to talk about their state legends and pick the best WNBA player from their respective states.
Williams represented Louisiana, Fulwiley represented South Carolina, and Johnson represented Savannah, Georgia. Johnson named Maya Moore and Seimone Augustus. Fulwiley stuck to the one and only A’ja Wilson with a gesture of respect for the South Carolina Gamecocks and the WNBA legend.
