Why Has Ta’Niya Latson Missed Games For South Carolina? Latest on Gamecocks’ Guard Following Texas A&M Game

There is a bug that has affected Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks as of late. It caused two of its starters, Ta’Niya Latson and Agot Makeer, to miss the game against Texas A&M. It was a road game for the No. 3 Gamecocks, though they still won it handily, 71-56, leaving College Station with a closer-than-expected win. They did this without Latson and Makeer, however.

This is not Ta’Niya Latson’s first time missing games for South Carolina, however, as she suffered an ankle sprain and missed three games between January and December, returning on Jan. 11 against Georgia. She had not been injured again until the game against Auburn, where she was not able to play in the second half.

Her condition after that game against Auburn was undisclosed, with head coach Dawn Staley stating that Latson was “not feeling well so we just decided to hold her out.” As for Makeer, she also did not finish that game against Auburn, and Staley stated that the Canadian forward was “in pain” and vowed to get her “checked out” once they returned to South Carolina.

Staley did not talk to reporters about Latson and Makeer, so not much was known about the injuries the two Gamecocks starters had suffered before that game. Point Guard Maddy McDaniel and freshman Ayla McDowell replaced the two in the Starting lineup against the Aggies.

Gamecocks Still Defeated Texas A&M Without Ta’Niya Latson and Agot Makeer

While they were down two starters, the road game was still a dominant performance for the South Carolina Gamecocks. With Ta’Niya Latson out, Joyce Edwards exploded for 28 points, while Tessa Johnson drained five three-pointers for 19 points to help Dawn Staley’s squad to a 71=56 victory on Monday.

The Aggies tried to make it competitive, as they were able to cut the Gamecocks’ 115-point lead down to five. However, this was where Joyce Edwards got hot. As for Johnson, she drained four of her five three-pointers in the first half and was 5 for 11 from behind the arc.

The Gamecocks now improve to 22-2 overall and are still the No. 3 team in the country. As for when Latson and Makeer would return, the team has not yet provided any timeline.
