Tammi Reiss is already finalizing a few decisions about her new coaching staff. Last Monday, she was named as the new head coach of the Florida Gators women’s basketball team.
According to a tweet by USA Today Sports‘ Mitchell Northam, Reiss has decided to retain Cynthia Jordan on her coaching staff.
“Per multiple sources, Tammi Reiss will retain Florida assistant Cynthia Jordan on her new staff. She played for Dawn Staley at Temple and was previously the DOBO at South Carolina before joining the Gators in 2022,” Northam wrote on X.
Cynthia Jordan played for Temple for four years under former head coach Dawn Staley. She served as a graduate assistant with the program before joining the South Carolina Gamecocks when Staley joined them in 2008. She served as a video assistant before being promoted to director of operations.
In 2022, Jordan joined the Florida Gators as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. She just finished her fourth season with the program.
Before joining the Gators, Tammi Reiss coached the Rhode Island Rams for six years. This season, she helped them qualify for the NCAA Tournament as the Atlantic 10 regular-season and tournament champions. However, they suffered a 68-55 loss to Alabama in the first round, ending their quest for a national championship.
On the other hand, the Florida Gators had Kelly Rae Finley as their coach from 2021 until recently. She was fired earlier this month after failing to help the program qualify for the NCAA Tournament. They finished with an 18-15 (5-11 SEC) record.
Florida AD Scott Stricklin Shares His Thoughts on Tammi Reiss’ Hiring
Tammi Reiss was brought in as the 12th head coach of the Gators women’s basketball team. Following this decision, athletic director Scott Stricklin came forward to share his honest thoughts on the situation.
“Tammi Reiss is a proven winner and an outstanding leader whose experience both as a player and coach stood out throughout this process,” Strickline said, as per the team’s website. “She brings tremendous enthusiasm, an unbelievable competitive spirit, and a relentless work ethic that will resonate with our student-athletes and our entire program.”
“We are excited to welcome Tammi to Gainesville and look forward to the energy and vision she will bring to our women’s basketball program,” he added.
Reiss played for Virginia during her collegiate career from 1989 to 1992. She then spent two years playing for the Utah Starzz in the WNBA (1997 to 1998) before deciding to transition to coaching.
