The Geno Auriemma’s UConn Huskies are headed to the Final Four after ending the Notre Dame Fighting Irish’s Cinderella run in the Elite Eight phase of the NCAA Tournament. The victory was an easy one for the Storrs program, with the final score of 70-52.
This way, the Huskies of Auriemma continue their perfect season and have to be considered the favorites to win the national title once again. In the aftermath of their Elite Eight win, Auriemma looked happy with himself and his team, and even danced with a cowboy hat on for the cameras.
Talking during the postgame press conference, his star players, Sarah Strong, Azzi Fudd, and Blanca Quinonez admitted that it’s difficult to see Auriemma this loose and happy. Fudd summed it up, saying:
“When he breaks out a dance move, that’s how you know he’s proud.”
Sarah, Quinonez, and Fudd led the Huskies in scoring, with 21, 20, and 13 points, respectively. Quinonez led them in rebounds, with eight, and Fudd in assists, with four.
Geno Auriemma Complains About the NCAA Tournament Format
Geno Auriemma is not happy with the current format of the NCAA Tournament. In particular, he has complained about the change from a four-site regional format to a two-site one, in the new format introduced in 2023.
For him, the change to a two-site format makes it more difficult for each team to use a venue’s facilities during the tournament. On Saturday, he complained about the scheduling and the chances UConn had to practice ahead of their game against Notre Dame.
“I just don’t understand some of the decisions that are made about our game when we’re trying to grow the goddamn game. Does anybody who makes these decisions ever ask the coaches and the players, ‘Hey, does this work? Do you guys do this during the regular season?’ Is this normal?” Auriemma said.
“Know what time our shootaround was yesterday? 6:20, I think, for half an hour. This morning, I just saw Notre Dame leaving, so they had media this morning. Their practice time is tonight at 5:30. … You know what time our practice time is? 6:30 tonight,” he added.
In the end, this seems to have been inconsequential for Auriemma’s team, as it won its Elite Eight game. However, his opinions are something that the NCAA should take into account.
