With Madison Booker, Rori Harmon, Aaliyah Crump, and Jordan Lee, Vic Schaefer had a strong unit going. However, the Texas Longhorns have had a worrying transfer portal so far. With Harmon getting drafted by the Washington Mystics, Texas finds itself wanting a replacement.
But bad news racks up for Schaefer. Justice Carlton has entered the transfer portal. Jordan Lee recently confirmed her commitment to SEC Rivals Dawn Staley’s South Carolina. Aaliyah Crump had also entered the transfer portal. She has now found her new team.
Crump has officially signed for the Duke Blue Devils. She will play her sophomore season under the leadership of Kara Lawson. For Duke, Taina Mair and Ashlon Jackson were picked in the WNBA Draft by Seattle Storm and Golden State Valkyries, respectively. Other than that, Anna Wikstrom and Hailey Johnson also entered the transfer portal.
Texas has now lost the core of the team that went to the Final Four. Vic Schaefer has his work cut out for him for next season. The only addition so far is Oklahoma guard Zya Vann, who announced her commitment only a few hours ago. Texas would need to solidify its squad way more than what it is right now if they want to go beyond this season or even repeat the Final Four feat.
Schaefer’s Texas Longhorns were one of the best teams in women’s college basketball last season. They had a 35-4 overall record, with a 13-3 record in the SEC. Texas was going strong before they were bested by Chori Close’s UCLA who eventually won the national championship.
Aaliyah Crump shares specially message as she officially signs for Duke
Aaliyah Crump, after her freshman season with Texas, decided it was time to explore options. In 24 games, she averaged 7.9 points with 2.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists. There were far better expectations from the former 5-star recruit; however, she did not have an ideal season. Now, as she joins Kara Lawson’s Duke, she hopes to find her best groove.
“For me, choosing Duke University goes far beyond one sentence. The moment I connected with Kara Lawson and her coaching staff, I knew I was exactly where I belonged. Their dedication and vision for the program is truly special, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be a part of it. The connection Coach Lawson and I have built is one of a kind, and I fully trust in her plan for the success of this program,” she said.
“I can’t wait to be coached by genuine people who support my growth not only as a basketball player, but as a person as well. This journey has led me to a sisterhood that has consistently made me feel like part of the family. The support and love within it are so strong and truly unique,” she added.
“I’m looking forward to competing alongside these amazing players, and I know we will have a tremendous amount of success together. This program is on track to make history, and I’m so thankful that I get to call this outstanding university and program home,” Crump shared.
