‘We Will Miss You’: Flau’jae Johnson’s Mom Gets Emotional Over Coach Bob Starkey’s Heartfelt Tribute to LSU Star Ahead of WNBA Draft

Flau’jae Johnson has been the backbone of the LSU Tigers over the last four seasons. Through her playing style, leadership, and personality, Johnson became a household name and a fan favorite.

Her work ethic and production on the court impressed her coaches, and somehow she also managed to launch her music career while representing LSU. Three albums, four EPs, a deal with Roc Nation, and a song with Lil Wayne, Johnson proved that she could do anything if she wanted to.

Johnson didn’t compromise on anything. She played basketball at the highest level, winning SEC Freshman of the Year, the NCAA Championship in 2023, and making multiple All-SEC team appearances.

Tonight, she will officially become a WNBA player. The former LSU guard is projected to be a top 10 pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft. As she leaves LSU to become a professional athlete, Bob Starkey narrates a tribute video made by the program.

“Everyone wants to be the biggest, to hit the biggest shots, to win the biggest games, I mean, how could you not?” Starkey says in the video. “But if you want to be the biggest, it takes what it takes. Early mornings in the gym and late nights in the studio. It’s leading by examples, for causes bigger than yourself.”

Starkey said that Johnson is the “biggest winner, brand, and inspiration to fans and young girls everywhere.”

Her mother, Kia Brooks, reposted the video on her Instagram story, acknowledging the tribute and Starkey’s kind words.

“We love you and we will miss you,” she wrote.

Johnson also commented on the video, “Real tears I love you @hoopcoachbobstarkey thank you @lsu.”

“Geaux Be Great, kid,” Starkey said at the end of the video.

Flau’jae Johnson on Her New Music Video

Johnson is on the brink of realizing her lifelong dream of becoming a WNBA player. But the moves she’s making ahead of the draft can help put her incredible work ethic into perspective.

She recently shot a music video for her song “Woah” on top of the Empire State Building. She planned on dropping the song ahead of the draft to mark the special moment.

“I mean, I knew it was the Empire State Building, but now I’m learning the history and seeing all the photos of the celebrities that came here and did their thing. I am pretty fired up to be in that group of people,” she said.

Her new song is about a new beginning in her life and the golden phase that she’s experiencing right now.
