Many fans and analysts thought LeBron James, who has won one championship ring with the Los Angeles Lakers, would retire from the franchise at the end of his career.
However, in a shocking move, James has now signed a 2-year, $8 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers with a player option.
The South Carolina women’s basketball head coach, Dawn Staley, a proud Philadelphia native, was ecstatic about the news of James joining Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, VJ Edgecombe, and more 76ers stars.
“Philly?! The Sixers?! Yo, Philly. Yo, Philly. Yo, Philly. Yo, Philly. We got the king, y’all. We got the king. We got the king!” Staley said. “ Welcome to Philly, Bron! Let me know if you need any spots. Let me know if Zhuri needs a place to go to school. We know the entire school district. Savannah, we got you. … Bron, good, great choice, my guy.” Staley said in her Instagram video.
Analyst Calls LeBron James’ Decision to Go to 76ers “Shameless”
Analyst Jason Whitlock discussed the LeBron James move in his recent edition of the podcast called “Fearless”. He said that the former Lakers star’s decision to sign with the 76ers is his most “shameless and indefensible ring chase yet.”
Whitlock added that James’ move is pure “ring chasing” and even called it a worse version of when the former Lakers star’s decision went to the Miami Heat, and said the decision to go to the 76ers has been the worst of all his decisions so far.
“It’s pure ring chasing, pure unadulterated. This is maybe a worse version than his going to the Miami Heat. This decision 2.0, or whatever this is, 3 or 4, is the worst of all the decisions. He’s joining a team with a stacked roster. I wanted him to go to the Nuggets. If he had gone to the Heat, I don’t think I would’ve ripped it. I think this is the worst move, even with him taking 2, $8 million deal. I wonder what they’re gonna have to pay Bronny.” Whitlock said.
After the announcement, James took to X to share his thoughts, revealing he thought he was done after the 2025 season; however, he wasn’t ready to announce anything then.
James added that he is not going to the 76ers for the money or his family, making it clear he wants a chance to win another championship.
