Last night, South Carolina Gamecocks players were playing a joke around the locker room with the job to hand the phone to the “baddest kid in the room.” When the phone passed to Tessa Johnson, she passed it on to teammate Alicia Tournebize and called her “Mi Poo Poo.”
When reporter Matt Dowell first heard it, he tried recalling where he had heard the words “Mi Poo Poo” before. Then he remembered that the reference was from the iconic TV show “F.R.I.E.N.D.S.”
The reference came in an episode of “F.R.I.E.N.D.S” where Joey is dating a woman named Katie, who is physically playful and shows love by hitting. At first, Joey thought it was cute but soon he started to find it too aggressive and painful. When he confronts Katie about it, she starts to comfort him by using baby-talk nicknames like “Mi Poo Poo.”
On Friday, Dowell shared the reference with Johnson, and she was surprised, as even she didn’t know until she was made aware of it. Here’s her reaction:
Tessa Johnson Eclipses 1000-Point Mark
Along with reaching the Final Four when South Carolina defeated TCU 78-52 in the Elite Eight, Tessa Johnson reached a major milestone in her college basketball career. The guard surpassed 1000 points in her career with the help of a 3-pointer. Johnson is not one for statistical achievement, as she said:
“I did not know that … I’m not going to lie, I didn’t even know about it. But I don’t really care, as long as we won the game.”
Overshadowing her own achievement, Johnson focused on praising freshman wing Agot Makeer, who scored 18 points off the bench. Makeer also had four rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
“I kept saying earlier that I’m very proud of her,” Johnson said. “She’s just been putting in the work, and she’s been trusting her process. Everyone’s process and journey is different. She’s been being patient. We keep telling her that her time is coming. She’s showing it out there now.”
Now, Tessa looks forward to the game against UConn which will decide if she will get to play in the national championship game.
