Iowa HC Jan Jensen Shares Heartfelt Message As Sparks Sign Kate Martin

The Los Angeles Sparks have signed Kate Martin to a standard contract for the remainder of this season. She played last season with the Golden State Valkyries but did not have an ideal season. After the Valkyries waived her, the Sparks signed her on a player development contract.

She was nearing her 12-game limit, so the Sparks decided to upgrade her to an active roster contract. Iowa coach Jan Jensen celebrated former Husky’s contract confirmation.

“So proud and happy for Kate! Let’s Goooo, Sparks!” She posted on X.

In 10 games so far this season for the Sparks, Martin has come off the bench in every game. She is averaging 2.6 points, 0.6 rebounds and 0.4 assists. It hasn’t been an ideal season for her so far. But with this contract confirmation, she must be looking to find some stability in the roster and find her form.

Ta’Niya Latson waived for Kate Martin

To make room for Martin, the Sparks had to sacrifice former South Carolina star Ta’Niya Latson. The Sparks selected her as the 20th overall pick in the 2026 WNBA draft. She also played all 10 games this season off the bench. The rookie is averaging 1.8 points, 1 rebound, 0.3 assists per game.

It wasn’t much to separate Latson and Martin. Both talented stars would’ve hoped for a better season to prove their place in the roster. However, the Sparks chose to invest in Martin’s potential.

Latson is now an unrestricted free agent and is eligible to sign a contract with any WNBA team. She can also take her services outside the WNBA and try making her name in the international leagues during the off-season. That would help her develop her skill, get constant game time and earn a solid income.

Over the course of 128 games in her college career, she had a solid average of 20.2 points, 4 rebounds and 3.8 assists. Whichever team decides to select Latson, would be investing in an elite scorer and a ball carrier who can contribute at any instant during the game.
