“I Can’t Say Paige Bueckers”: Geno Auriemma Omits Star from Top UConn Players List for One Reason

Paige Bueckers has become a powerhouse in not just women’s basketball, but women’s sports as a whole, with her name being synonymous with praise the world over. The Dallas Wings star has broken barriers and pushed envelopes in the best way possible to grow the women’s game and deserves all the plaudits she gets.

So when her former head coach Geno Auriemma decided to leave her out of his top three players he ever coached at UConn, that ought to raise some eyebrows.

When asked to rank the top three players he has ever coached at UConn, Auriemma didn’t hesitate, quickly naming three stalwarts of the program.

“I would say probably Dianna Taurasi, Maya Moore, Breanna Stewart. I can’t say Paige Bueckers because she’s too young,” Auriemma remarked.

The 72-year-old is currently at the FIBA Women’s World Cup Draw and the subsequent Hall of Fame Ceremony and is bound to field several questions about one of his top proteges.

Despite her age, many would argue that Bueckers has done enough to be considered in the top three players ever coached by the legendary Geno Auriemma. However, it’s clear that despite his love for one of his top players, Geno doesn’t quite rate Bueckers as among the best he’s ever coached, at least for now.

Paige Bueckers Comments on Geno Auriemma vs Dawn Staley Altercation

Just as Geno Auriemma is constantly questioned about Paige Bueckers, the ex-UConn star also has to constantly deal with questions about her former boss.

So when Auriemma and Dawn Staley recently clashed at the NCAA Tournament, Paige was quick to try and cool down the heat.

“It’s unfortunate, just because there was so much good basketball being played,” Bueckers replied.

“UCLA had a dominant run, South Carolina was playing great basketball, Texas was playing great basketball. And I feel like those should be the storylines. Obviously, the way that it was handled wasn’t the best,” she added.

There’s clearly a lot of mutual respect between Bueckers and Auriemma, but it would be interesting to hear the former’s response to being left out of a coveted all-time list that she would no doubt have loved to be a part of.
