Will LSU Make It to Final Four? A Look at Kim Mulkey’s LSU’s Chances After Devastating South Carolina Loss

It seems that the South Carolina Gamecocks (25-2, 11-1 SEC) have LSU’s number, as they just defeated the Tigers (22-4, 8-4 SEC) again, making this 18 in a row after a 79-72 victory. This also meant that South Carolina has also gotten its revenge against Kim Mulkey after she lured away one of their best players to Baton Rouge in MiLaysia Fulwiley.

As for LSU, it dropped down to No. 6 in the rankings after the loss to the Gamecocks, though it will probably still make it to March Madness, just not as one of the top-seeded teams. It was a tough home loss for LSU even after keepings things close, as South Carolina proved to be just too much.

As they are still the No. 6 team, the Tigers have a massive chance to get the No. 2 seed in various regional tournaments, while South Carolina will likely get a No. 1 seed. As a No. 2 seed, it is very much possible for the Tigers to make it to the Final Four, though they would still have to contend with their region’s No. 1 seed in the final. The higher that No. 1’s AP poll ranking is, the less their chances of making it to the Final Four.

Right now, UConn is the likeliest to retain a No. 1 seed, as the defending national champions have stayed undefeated while also retaining that No. 1 spot in the rankings. Ranked No. 2 is UCLA, which has also been unstoppable so far, with only one loss and is also likely to get the No. 1 seed, and the same can be said for No. 3 South Carolina and No. 4 Texas.

Charlie Crème of ESPN believes that LSU is likely to get a No. 2 seed in Regional 2, Sacramento, as does NCAA.com’s Autumn Johnson. Meanwhile, Megan Gauer of HerHoopsStats.com and CBS Sports’ Connor Groel believes they might go to Regional 1 in Fort Worth, Texas, as a No. 2 seed.

Which Teams Would LSU Likely Be Paired Up With If NCAA Tournament Starts Now?

If the NCAA national tournament were to begin now, Kim Mulkey’s LSU Tigers would likely be in Regional 1 in Fort Worth as the No. 2 seed. The question is, which schools are likely to join them there?

According to NOLA.com, LSU would likely be with the undefeated UConn Huskies at the No. 1 seed, as well as No. 3 seed Ohio State and No. 4 seed Oklahoma. Still, LSU tends to shine more in the national championship tournament than the regular season, as it has entered as the No. 3 seed in the last four seasons. However, if the Tigers land with UConn, a Final Four would be hard to reach.
