Geno Auriemma and UConn reached their 25th Final Four after beating Niele Ivey’s Notre Dame 70-52 in the Elite Eight on Sunday. It was a rather comfortable win for the UConn Huskies, who got the better of Notre Dame for the second time this season. The Huskies did not trail at the end of any quarter. Their dominance was clear from the start.
Before the game, Hannah Hidalgo showed a lot of character when she said that the Notre Dame team that UConn beat earlier in the season was not at its best. She said that, being in good form, Notre Dame is ready to take on the Huskies this time. Unfortunately for her, the game did not pan out like that. However, she still had competitive words for UConn, and this time, straight to Auriemma himself.
After the win, Geno said:
“I just love watching her, and I asked her after the game if she was old enough to go pro, and she said, ‘No, I want one more shot of you guys.'”
This shows how competitive Hidalgo is and also how much Geno admires her. Hidalgo still has one more year for WNBA eligibility. But it would not be an overstatement to consider her to be one of the candidates for the No. 1 pick at the WNBA Draft in her class.
UConn Advances to Final Four After Beating Notre Dame
Sarah Strong once again dominated the proceedings with 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals. Azzi Fudd played her part with 13 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. However, there was another UConn star who stepped up.
Blanca Quinonez scored 20 points and had 8 rebounds in 30 minutes. With 7-12 field goals, 4-8 three-pointers, and 2-2 free throws, Blanca really impressed in the Elite Eight.
For Notre Dame, it was yet another masterclass from Hannah Hidalgo. She got another double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. The lack of support for Hidalgo was evident. UConn will now play in the Final Four against either South Carolina or TCU.
