Geno Auriemma and the UConn face Dawn Staley’s South Carolina in the Final Four. This is the repeat of last year’s NCAA Tournament final, which Paige Bueckers and company won.
Before the blockbuster showdown, Sarah Strong, Azzi Fudd, and coach Auriemma addressed the media. Sarah was asked how Auriemma manages the team. She explained the expectations Geno has from the squad and how the players are dedicated to giving it their all.
However, while she was answering, Auriemma decided to mess with her. That broke her rhythm and induced a hilarious conscious reaction from Strong.
“He has very high expectations for all of his players, and he demands a lot,” Sarah said.
Auriemma hilariously interrupted, saying:
“Can you speak into the microphone, please, so everybody can hear all these things you’re saying about me? Please speak into the microphone.”
Azzi Fudd covered her mouth, trying to hold in laughter as the coach messed with Sarah. The room erupted in laughter, and Sarah continued:
“He’s been very demanding of us, and you then expect a lot of yourself. Y’all can hear me? Like I can hear myself. No, they can hear me, I know.”
The reporters laughed, and Geno was hysterical as he had gotten to Sarah Strong.
The Huskies are on the verge of winning their record-extending 13th national championship. They are just two games away from an unbeaten NCAA title.
Dawn Staley gives Geno Auriemma’s UConn its flowers
Dawn Staley was asked about the Final Four matchup and the UConn Huskies under Geno Auriemma. A reporter asked Staley how both teams have evolved.
Staley said that UConn had been the standard in women’s basketball for a very long time. She added that every team aims to measure up to its standard.
She also said that UConn’s level helps the whole women’s college basketball grow. Staley shared how, in strategising against Geno, trying to match up to that level and win against them is almost impossible.
