Geno Auriemma is one of the greatest coaches in the history of college basketball. He has earned the respect of every person in the basketball world. Auriemma has been a coach for over 40 years, and he has taken a lot of great players and capable coaches under his wing.
Auriemma is known for his intensity, passion, and dedication. He has trained some of the greatest players in women’s basketball, namely Rebecca Lobo, Sue Bird, Maya Moore, Breanna Stewart, Diana Taurasi, Tina Charles, and, most recently, Paige Bueckers. Those are some of the athletes whom Auriemma shaped into brilliant players.
He has also kick-started the careers of some of the very talented coaches. Chris Dailey, Jamelle Elliot, Morgan Valley, Tonya Cardoza, Charlene Curtis, Carla Berbue, Willnett Crockett, and Jennifer Rizzotti are just some of the names that have trained under Geno Auriemma’s leadership. The most recent coach who has taken UConn’s winning mentality to her own career is the Vanderbilt Commodores’ Shea Ralph.
Shea Ralph has led Vanderbilt to an unbeaten season so far. In fact, Geno’s UConn and his apprentice Shea’s Vanderbilt are the only two teams that are still unbeaten this season. One is the No. 1 team in the nation and defending national champion, the University of Connecticut. The team is filled with stars and boasts 12 national championships. The other is Vanderbilt, a team that has made one Final Four and has never won a title.
Vanderbilt HC Shea Ralph’s Impressive Basketball Career
Apart from being Geno’s assistant, Shea Ralph also chose him as her coach at UConn during her playing days in 1996. Despite two major ACL injuries, she had a super successful career. She won the NCAA title in 2000 and was also named the NCAA tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
She joined the UConn Huskies in 2008 when Geno recruited her to fill an open spot in his coaching team. For the next 13 years, Shea was one of Geno’s most trusted assistants. During her time in the coaching team, the Huskies won six national championships.
