On Monday, Sarah Strong achieved an incredible milestone of scoring her 1,000-point in just 59 games. UConn women’s basketball head coach Geno Auriemma has full faith and belief in his sophomore and is sure enough about Strong’s future as potentially the best player in the nation. After the Huskies snapped their three-game losing streak against Notre Dame with a dominant 85-47 victory, Auriemma addressed the press to express his appreciation and regard for his sophomore sensation.
Strong had 18 points, 11 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 blocks to seal the deal. According to Auriemma, the key to unleashing Strong’s explosion lies in challenging her intentionality.
.”Playing against a really good team. Accusing her of being lackadaisical. She takes great pride in thinking that everything I do has a purpose to it, when you question that it pisses her off,” Auriemma explained.
By questioning Sarah Strong’s effort and suggesting she was drifting through plays without intent, Auriemma struck a nerve that transformed Strong from a skilled player to a relentless force. This psychological prodding forced Strong to prove that every movement had a purpose, resulting in a performance that not only snapped the skid against the Irish but also saw her eclipse the 1,000-career point mark in just 59 games. Only Paige Bueckers and Maya Moore from the program have previously been able to reach the milestone in fewer games.
Geno Auriemma Earlier Called Out ‘Sucker’ Sarah Strong For Her Selflessness
After UConn’s blowout 84-48 win over Seton Hall earlier this month, Geno Auriemma focussed his critique on Sarah Strong, jokingly labeling her as a “sucker” for her excessive selflessness. Auriemma identified a specific psychological hurdle where Strong fears that missing shots would negatively impact the squad. He told the reporters,
“She’s just got to get rid of that, ‘If I miss, I’m hurting my team’ [mindset].”
Countering this logic, the Hall of Fame coach argued that passing up open looks is the actual detriment, bluntly stating: “No, if you pass it, you’re hurting our team the last three games. Sucker.”
This somehow mirrors the push Auriemma used to give Paige Bueckers to become a more aggressive scorer. It also underscores the candid dynamic within the locker room, which Auriemma described by noting “That’s how women talk to men.” While the playful critique highlights the defiant communication he shares with his players, the ultimate goal is for Sarah Strong to develop a killer instinct, which would make her virtually unstoppable in a deep tournament run.
