“I Lost Myself”: Geno Auriemma Issues Another Apology to Dawn Staley After Final Four’s Heated Exchange

UConn Huskies coach Geno Auriemma has issued another statement regarding his confrontation with South Carolina Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley after their Final Four game.

The Gamecocks defeated the Huskies 62-48 to end their 54-game winning streak, but the two veteran coaches engaged in a war of words after the game.

Auriemma recently said he acted out of character after building a great reputation for decades in the sport. With this, the tenured tactician hopes that all entities involved can now move on from the incident.

“This morning, Dawn Staley and I spoke about our interaction after the game last Friday. I apologized to Dawn, her staff, and her team. I’ve lost more games in the Final Four than any coach in history. But Friday, I lost something more important. I lost myself. Those who know me know I have nothing but respect and admiration for the game and the coaches who coach it. Dawn and her team deserved to win, and they deserved better from me,” Auriemma wrote.

“Women’s basketball deserved better. My university, my athletes, my former players, and our fans deserved better. Dawn and I have agreed to move on, and we hope the focus will shift back to the growth in women’s basketball. The game deserves it,” he concluded.

Staley and the Gamecocks defeated Auriemma and his Connecticut-based program by 14 points, 62-48, in the semifinal of the national tournament on Friday, in neutral territory, the Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix, Arizona. South Carolina was unable to finish the job, however, as they lost in the NCAA title game to the UCLA Bruins by 28 points, 79-51.

What Went Down Between Dawn Staley And Geno Auriemma In The 2026 NCAA Final Four?

The reason both coaches have been releasing statements is because of their viral, heated verbal tussle after their 2026 NCAA Final Four game.

After the final buzzer sounded to a South Carolina Gamecocks win, Geno Auriemma went over to Dawn Staley for a handshake. But Auriemma said something to Staley that ticked her off, causing them to be held back by their respective staff members.
