After UConn and South Carolina’s Final Four showdown, Geno Auriemma got caught in one of the worst moments of his 41-year-long head coaching life. After the Huskies lost against the Gamecocks, Auriemma charged towards Dawn Staley and started aggressively talking to her.
Staley then gave it back to Auriemma and told her staff that she was going to beat his “a**.”
This aggressive behaviour displayed by Auriemma caught flak from many fans, analysts and players as they called him out for charging up to a woman in her face like that.
One day after the incident, Auriemma issued an apology to South Carolina’s staff, which again didn’t sit well with many individuals as it didn’t mention Staley. Stephen A. Smith was one of the analysts who felt that the aplogy just didn’t cut it.
“Apology was weak as hell. I mean, I accept it. accept that we all accept that he doesn’t owe us an apology. He doesn’t even owe South Carolina an apology. He owes Dawn Staley an apology. What the hell is up with a statement, an apology, and you don’t mention her name once? You didn’t go up to the staff of South Carolina. You didn’t go up to the University of North Carolina. You went in the face of Dawn Staley.” said Stephen A. Smith, reacting to the apology.
“That is who you address publicly. That’s who you try to address publicly, post-game, you know, when you was talking about it, you didn’t talk about what you said about Carolina, you talked about what you said about her.”
“I can’t believe you can’t let that statement get out like that. You could at least mention her name since she was the one you tried to disrespect. It’s really bad.”
Analyst Bluntly Calls Out Geno Auriemma Over Behavior Towards Dawn Staley
Analyst Dan Le Batard shared a clip of him talking about the “story of the weekend” consisting of Geno Auriemma and Dawn Staley.
The analyst called Auriemma a “poor loser” and said the UConn head coach made a complete fool of himself after getting beaten by the South Carolina team by double digits.
Le Batard further said that if Auriemma tried to actually fight Staley, the South Carolina head coach would’ve Suplex’d him.
”Geno Auriemma should be embarrassed.” Dan Le Batard said.
The analyst called Auriemma a loser and said he lacked grace after the game.
