Days after Dawn Staley’s on-court exchange with UConn head coach Geno Auriemma, the South Carolina coach addressed the situation publicly, offering a response following one of the most talked-about moments of the tournament.
The incident took place in the last moments of South Carolina’s 62-48 win, where cameras caught Staley and Auriemma in a brief but intense shouting match near midcourt. The situation escalated quickly, with assistant coaches and officials stepping in to separate the two.
Speaking after the game, Staley made it clear she did not believe there was any intentional disrespect leading up to the exchange.
“I have no idea,” Staley said when initially asked about the moment. “I’m of integrity. So if I did something wrong, I had no idea what I did.”
She explained that she had followed her usual pregame routine, including greeting members of UConn’s staff, and was unsure what may have triggered Auriemma’s reaction. Despite the tension, she downplayed the incident, pointing to the emotional nature of high-stakes games.
“Sometimes things get heated. We move on,” she added.
Dawn Staley Issues Official Statement
As the conversation around the incident grew, Staley later released a more detailed statement, urging the basketball community to refocus on the bigger picture.
“I spoke with Geno, and I want to be clear – I have a great deal of respect for him and what he’s meant to this game,” she said. “One moment doesn’t define a career.”
Staley emphasized that Auriemma’s contributions to women’s basketball should not be overshadowed by a single exchange, while also reinforcing her desire to move past the situation.
“I’m asking everyone to turn the page. Let’s refocus on what matters most – continuing to elevate our game,” she added.
Auriemma had earlier apologized for his actions, stating there was “no excuse” for how he handled the end of the game, though he did not mention Staley by name in his statement.
While the exchange briefly shifted attention away from South Carolina’s performance, Staley’s message appears aimed at restoring focus.
With both programs expected to remain among the top contenders in women’s college basketball, the incident may linger in memory, but for now, Staley has made a clear stance that it’s time to move on
