South Carolina Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley recently revealed whether UConn Huskies coach Geno Auriemma has contacted her following their confrontation.
On Sunday, Staley and her Gamecocks lost 51-79 to coach Cori Close’s UCLA Bruins in this year’s national championship game in neutral territory, the Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix, Arizona.
Meanwhile, Staley and Auriemma got into a verbal tussle following their NCAA Final Four matchup on Friday, when the Gamecocks came out on top. With Auriemma recently admitting that he instigated it and apologizing to the Gamecocks, Staley was asked at a press conference on Sunday if Auriemma had contacted her at all.
“ Yeah, that’s a Geno question, right? It really is a Geno question. I haven’t heard from Geno, so I have no. That’s not, I haven’t, I mean, I got 800 text messages, so I don’t know if he texted or not… I will address all of that at another time. It’s not this weekend,” Staley affirmed.
Unfortunately for Staley and the Gamecocks, they lost to the Los Angeles-based program in the final. South Carolina missed out on what was potentially its third national title in five years, as it was convincingly beaten in the national tournament final once again. Last year, they were defeated at the same stage by coach Auriemma’s Huskies, 82-59.
Dawn Staley Wants The Narrative Focused On The UCLA Bruins’ 2026 National Championship Berth
Also in her post-game presser on Sunday, coach Dawn Staley asserted that she wants the focus of today’s women’s basketball narrative to be solely on the UCLA Bruins’ national championship berth.
Staley said she’d much rather talk about the final and even why and how her team lost than her heated exchange with Geno Auriemma.
“ I don’t want it, like it is UCLA’s day, right? Let’s keep it UCLA. Them winning the national championship, you know… Like we’re not gonna damper UCLA’s day with it. We could talk about South Carolina, us losing. We could talk about, you know, UCLA winning the national championship, and what’s great about our game today,” Staley said. (0:13)
