Geno Auriemma’s heated exchange with Dawn Staley after the Final Four loss is going to follow him for a while. Auriemma is being widely criticized by fans and analysts for his actions and for ruining a great moment for the Gamecocks.
With less than a second left in the game, the South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley, walked up to Auriemma to shake hands and exchange pleasantries. It’s been a longstanding practice, and it shows great sportsmanship.
Auriemma, however, wasn’t in the mood to show any respect to Staley as he started a heated verbal exchange, and within seconds, it turned into a chaotic atmosphere. The two coaches had to be separated by staff, players, and refs.
A day after that saga, Staley’s team is taking on the UCLA Bruins in the National Championship game in Phoenix. Since it’s the last game of the season, a montage of past NCAA championship teams was shown on the Jumbotron.
Auriemma has won 12 NCAA titles, including one from 2025. So, the video montage featured him several times. Every time the fans saw him on the jumbotron, the arena erupted with loud boos. A video of the same was posted on X by Natalie Esquire.
Ever since that moment after the Final Four game, Auriemma has been receiving flak from fans. Several notable analysts and former athletes have also chimed in on the ongoing discussion.
Staley, on the other hand, is being praised for how she handled the situation and led her team to victory. Today, however, the Bruins have made it tough for Staley’s team to make any real impact.
With over five minutes to go in the third quarter, the Bruins are leading 48-28.
Shannon Sharpe Called Geno Auriemma a ‘Sore Loser’
On a recent episode of Nightcap, NFL legend Shannon Sharpe discussed the Geno Auriemma-Dawn Staley drama with his co-hosts. Sharpe didn’t mince his words while criticizing the UConn Huskies head coach.
“This is, I thought I was gonna win, I was supposed to win, and I got beat. That’s what this was about. This was a sore loser. Ain’t about no damn handshake,” Sharpe said.
Joe Johnson stated that Auriemma’s apology after the backlash should have been directed toward Staley. In his opinion, all Auriemma had to do was to congratulate Staley and her team, accept the defeat, and move on. Instead, he gave the media a topic to discuss and dissect for days.
