Gary Redus joined Kim Mulkey’s LSU Tigers in 2022 as an assistant coach. It was only a year after Mulkey became the head coach of the program. Together, they had a successful run, which included an NCAA Division I Tournament.
Now Redus is moving on as he’s received an opportunity to lead a program. The former LSU assistant coach recently accepted the Rutgers Scarlet Knights women’s basketball program’s head coaching offer.
Redus has previously worked with Vanderbilt, Delta State, and West Georgia, but this will be his first head coaching stint. After the hiring news became official, Kim Mulkey released a statement, wishing Redus well on the new journey.
“In his four seasons at LSU, Gary has been a constant joy to be around both on and off the court, bringing along an infectious energy in everything he does. His ability to create and maintain meaningful relationships with his players and fellow colleagues will no doubt shine at his next stop,” Mulkey said.
“Gary’s overwhelming love for the game showed throughout his time in Baton Rouge, and I couldn’t be happier for him to get a head coaching opportunity. We wish him, his wife Tiffany and two kids, Gio and Ella the best at Rutgers!”
Redus responded to Mulkey’s statement, thanking her for taking a chance on him and believing in his ability as a coach.
“You took a chance on me when a lot of people chose not to. Your belief in me never wavered and your support has always been second to none. Thank you for the guidance and the mentorship,” Redus wrote.
He also thanked her for supporting him as he takes on a new challenge as the head coach of a program.
Gary Redus Thanked the Rutgers Program
Rutgers Director of Athletics Keli Zinn released a statement welcoming Redus to the program. Zinn has worked with Redus in the past and is aware of the work he is capable of in his new position as a head coach.
Zinn believes that Redus will bring his top recruiting and coaching ability to Rutgers, which will help elevate the program. Redus thanked Zinn and the program for the warm welcome.
“I am no stranger to the rich history of basketball here at Rutgers, and I look forward to building on that legacy as we move the program forward. I’d like to thank Keli and President Tate for their vote of confidence in me and the vision we share for the future of this program,” he said.
Redus stated that he’s looking forward to immersing himself within the community and helping shape a new era in Rutgers women’s basketball.
