Former LSU Tigers power forward Angel Reese congratulated Gary Redus II on his new job. Redus joined Kim Mulkey’s program in 2022 as an assistant coach. He had a successful run working with Mulkey, who joined the team in 2021.
Before LSU, Redus was the assistant coach for SMU from 2021 to 2022. He has had short stints with Vanderbilt, Delta State, and West Georgia as well. Now Redus is taking a major leap in his coaching career.
Rutgers Women’s Basketball recently announced that Redus will be the program’s next head coach. It marks a new era for the Scarlet Knights, who have had a terrible run this season. They won just one game in the Big Ten conference and ended up at the bottom.
Overall, they won 9 of 29 games and finished the season on an 11-game losing streak. By hiring Redus as their next head coach, they’re trying to turn things around, and he will get ample time to prepare his team for the next season.
As Redus takes a major step in his career, he is receiving support from fans and former LSU players. Angel Reese, who played for the LSU Tigers from 2022 to 2022, congratulated Redus on his new job as a head coach.
“So deserving! Proud of you my guy!!” she wrote on X.
Rutgers Director of Athletics Keli Zinn made the official announcement with a statement, welcoming Redus to the program.
“We are thrilled to welcome Gary and his family to Rutgers,” Zinn said. “Having worked with him previously, I’ve seen firsthand the energy, commitment, and competitive mindset he brings to coaching. Coach Redus is well known as one of the top recruiters in the country, with an exceptional ability to create relationships and attract elite talent.”
Zinn stated that Redus is a “teacher of the game” and is capable of developing players to reach their full potential.
Gary Redus II Thanked Rutgers for the Opportunity
Redus also released a statement after landing the job with Rutgers. He stated that he is “honored” and “grateful” for the opportunity, and he will try to build the best possible team to compete in the next season.
“I am no stranger to the rich history of basketball here at Rutgers and I look forward to building on that legacy as we move the program forward. I’d like to thank Keli and President Tate for their vote of confidence in me and the vision we share for the future of this program,” Redus said.
Redus is looking forward to immersing himself in the process and the community to work toward elevating the Rutgers basketball program.
