South Carolina Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley does not care who her team faces in the upcoming quarterfinals of the 2026 conference tournament, as their opponent is yet to be determined. On Wednesday, March 4, Staley was interviewed by collegiate basketball reporter Claire Foley, who shared it on X/Twitter. The tenured tactician was asked who she preferred facing in the postseason this year.
This is because the matchup between coach Kenny Brooks’ Kentucky Wildcats and coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson’s Georgia Bulldogs will decide who will match up against Staley and company first in the SEC tournament. But for Staley, it does not matter who they end up going against, as her team will be well-prepared for every opponent.
“ Oh, yeah, I mean, we started that. We started that as soon as we knew who was on our side of the bracket. And fortunately, we’ve played Kentucky recently. Georgia, we haven’t played in a long time. So it is good to see if who comes out of that, and whoever it is, it is a tough match up for, so we got to be ready for them,” Staley said.
Staley and the Gamecocks finished their 2025-26 regular season with an overall record of 29-2 (15-1 SEC), maintaining their top seed in this year’s SEC standings. The South Carolina-based program is hoping to win its third national title in the last five years in 2026, especially since it lost out on back-to-back national championships in 2025.
Dawn Staley Looks Forward To Early Regular Season Ends Yearly
For years now, coach Dawn Staley and her South Carolina Gamecocks have been one of the powerhouse teams that come out of the SEC and head to both the conference tournament and March Madness.
During the aforementioned media availability, Staley was asked how beneficial it is that this has been the case for a long time now, allowing the Gamecocks extra days of rest before the postseason.
“It’s great. I mean, it’s one that we take the two days off of the regular season. We’ve done that forever. Just to rejuvenate us and hopefully give us enough oomph for a long weekend,” Staley explained (0:15).
