Geno Auriemma’s UConn program has produced some of the greatest players in the history of women’s college basketball. The latest to grow from the Huskies’ ranks is Sarah Strong. Last year, she joined an elite company of UConn legends Diana Taurasi, Lisa Leslie, Breanna Stewart, Paige Bueckers, Lisa Leslie, and more to win a national championship with the UConn Huskies.
Strong won the NCAA title in her freshman season. In her first season, she averaged 16.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 3.6 assists with 2.3 steals in 40 games. She had Geno Auriemma’s trust pretty early in her career and started all 40 games on the way to UConn’s 12th historic NCAA title.
This season, in 30 games so far, UConn has been unbeaten. Strong has averaged 18.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 3.2 steals. After Paige Bueckers’ departure to the WNBA last year, Strong is one of the most important players alongside Azzi Fudd.
There have been a lot of compliments and a lot of comparisons to how Sarah Strong plays. And the most common one has been with Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic. Recently, Strong made her feelings clear about that comparison.
The host talked about how Geno Auriemma, Diana Taurasi, and several others have compared Strong’s game with that of Jokic and how she gives off ‘Baby Jokic’ vibes.
To this comparison, she replied:
“I mean, yeah, I just it’s a really great compliment. I feel like he’s obviously an amazing player, but I mean, yeah, just thank you for the compliment, but he’s just like so good. I can’t even like begin to compare myself to him.”
Sarah Strong Shares Inspiration From UConn Legend Maya Moore
In the same segment, the host asked Strong if she had to pick someone she patterns her game after, who would it be? She answered:
“I watched Maya Moore growing up. I mean I watched a like a few players, but Maya Moore was what my dad introduced me or who my dad introduced me when I was younger. So I would say a little bit of her, and I don’t know, maybe Jokic, the passing.”
