Flau’Jae Johnson Reveals Nick Saban Message Helping LSU Recover from Gamecocks Loss

Flau’jae Johnson led the LSU Tigers in scoring with 21 points when they faced the South Carolina Gamecocks. She was the only player on the team who scored over 20 points in the 72-79 home loss.

Johnson, like the rest of her teammates, was disappointed over the loss. Currently, the LSU Tigers are ranked fifth in the SC with a 22-4 overall record, and they are 8-4 in the conference.

At the post-game press conference, Johnson talked about losing to South Carolina and what would be her key takeaways from the game. Johnson said that the loss was hard to deal with, but the team is full of spirited players who will not let this stop their momentum.

They have now shifted their focus to the next game against the Ole Miss Rebels on February 19. While this approach after a loss is good, Johnson said that she’ll learn from the mistakes and move on to the next challenge.

“Nick Saban says, ‘Never waste a failure,’ so we are not going to waste this loss,” Johnson said. “We are definitely going to learn from it. We’re going to grow from it.”

“As vets, tomorrow or whenever we get back in the lab, we gotta focus. We really gotta be intentional about these last couple of games that we have and then going into the SEC Tournament and the Big Dance.”

Johnson said that the team needs to focus on the next stretch of the season. Holding each other accountable while giving their level best on the floor is going to be the difference maker for the LSU Tigers moving forward.

Flau’jae Johnson’s Head Coach, Kim Mulkey, Shared Her Thoughts on the Loss

At the post-game press conference, Mulkey said that she hopes her team takes this loss very seriously. Although she has a very new team right now, she’s still happy with the way they’ve performed.

But in the final stretch of the season, they need to do better to get over the hump. Mulkey said that staying in the right mindset will help the LSU Tigers do great in the remaining games.

“You are this close to winning some of those games against people you are not supposed to beat. And we did this year, didn’t we beat Texas here? We weren’t supposed to win that game, so just keep plugging away. Stay in the right mindset and understand it’s a lot of basketball left to be played after the regular season is over,” she said.

In her opinion, the team doesn’t need to do anything differently at this point in the season. They are already on the right track; they just need to capitalize on a few big moments.
