The South Carolina Gamecocks got an easy win against the Oklahoma Sooners in the Sweet 16 round this Saturday afternoon. Dawn Staley’s team defeated its conference rival by 26 points, mainly on the back of a massive performance by Ta’Niya Latson. The guard led them in scoring with 28 points in 29 minutes of play.
However, for Staley, this was just a regular performance for her team. She’s used to her Gamecocks ruling on the court. Speaking in the game’s aftermath about Latson’s performance, she seemed to imply that this was a regular performance for her, and she brought up her 30-point performance in last year’s first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Staley jokingly asked what prevented her from repeating that performance this time around in the Sweet 16, saying:
“She’s short changing us, she only had what, 28? She couldn’t get 2 more points??”
She then praised Latson for her performance on the court. She also praised her ability to isolate from social media noise. Staley reiterated her desire for Latson’s career to take off, for her to have the chance to play in the Final Four this season, and in the WNBA one day.
Dawn Staley Praises the SEC’s Ability to Create Great Teams and Competition
To start her post-game press conference, Dawn Staley lauded the Oklahoma Sooners on their season and also praised the SEC for being a league where great teams can come through. She said:
“First, I want to congratulate Oklahoma on a great year. We’re very fortunate/unfortunate that we at least have an SEC team in the Elite Eight, at least one. Actually, we’ve got Texas, right? Is that it? For right now?”
She’s right that the SEC has proven to be dominant in women’s college basketball. Of the five national championships in the 2020s, three have been won by SEC schools (two by South Carolina and one by LSU).
